1/12 GP Replicas 1982 Formula 1 Gilles Villeneuve Ferrari 126C2 #27 Qualification Belgian GP Car Model with Driver Figure
Belgian GP (Zolder) 1982
During the second qualifying session on Saturday, Villeneuve attempted to beat the time set by his now-hated teammate Pironi in order to secure a place ahead of him on the starting grid. During his qualifying lap, he caught up with Jochen Mass, who was on his way back to the pits and therefore driving relatively slowly. Mass saw the approaching Ferrari in his rear-view mirror and moved to the right to give way. Unfortunately, Villeneuve had decided at the same time to pass the German on the right, away from the ideal line. As a result, he crashed into the March 821 at high speed. His Ferrari 126C2 took off, landed nose-first beyond the crash barriers and bounced back onto the track. The car broke into several pieces and Villeneuve was thrown out along with his seat shell. Resuscitation attempts were made at the scene of the accident and during transport to the hospital. In the evening, the medical equipment was turned off and Villeneuve was pronounced dead. The Ferrari team then left.
