1/18 ModelCarGroup 1982 Formula 1 Gilles Villeneuve Ferrari 126C2 #27 Belgium GP Car Model
During the second qualifying session on Saturday, Villeneuve tried to beat the time of his recently hated team-mate Pironi in order to be ahead of him on the grid. During his qualifying lap, he ran into Jochen Mass, who was on his way back to the pits and was therefore driving comparatively slowly. Mass recognized the approaching Ferrari in his rear-view mirror and cleared the racing line by pulling to the right. Unfortunately, Villeneuve had simultaneously decided to pass the German on the right off the racing line. As a result, he hit the March 821 at high speed. His Ferrari 126C2 rose up, landed nose-first beyond the crash barriers and bounced back onto the track from there. The car broke into several pieces and Villeneuve was ejected along with his seat shell. Resuscitation attempts were carried out at the scene of the accident and during transportation to hospital. In the evening, the medical equipment was switched off and Villeneuve was pronounced dead. The Ferrari team then left.
