- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Hungarian Air Force (Magyar Légierő) operates the JAS 39 Gripen as its primary multirole fighter, based at Kecskemét Air Base. This specific model (numbered 31) replicates a jet known for performing at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford in 2022. The actual Gripen replaced Hungary's aging MiG-29 fleet to provide NATO-compatible supersonic interception and air defense.
- After joining NATO in 1999, Hungary sought to replace its aging MiG-29 fleet. In 2001, the Hungarian government chose a lease-purchase agreement with Sweden for 14 Gripen fighters (12 single-seat JAS 39C and 2 two-seat JAS 39D), favoring them over American F-16 offers due to better financial terms.
- The first aircraft arrived at Kecskemét Air Base in March 2006. By the end of 2010, the Gripens became the sole guardians of Hungarian airspace as the MiG-29s were retired.
- In February 2024, Hungary signed a contract for four additional Gripen C aircraft, bringing the total fleet to 18. Under the current agreement, Hungary will transition from leasing to full ownership of the original 14 jets in early 2026.
