Return to fame and glory
The tragic death of Lancia's star driver Alberto Ascari shortly after the Monaco GP in 1955 meant - in addition to financial problems that had accumulated in the meantime - the early end for Scuderia Lancia's ambitious D50 project. It was also the bitter end of Gianni Lancia's dream of being involved in Formula 1, if not driving at the very front.
As a result, on July 26, 1955, working D50, design documents, tools and lots of parts were handed over to the previous competitor Ferrari.
Ferrari revised the Lancia construction in various points. Only then did the triumphant advance of this car with its many revolutionary ideas really begin.
Here are the most important changes:
• The two fuel tanks, positioned one each on the left and right longitudinally between the wheels and separated from the body, are replaced by a single tank at the rear of the vehicle, just behind the driver's seat.
• The body is extended on the sides where the fuel tanks were previously located, resulting in a continuous and flowing surface profile from front wheels to rear wheels.
• At Ferrari, the space under the body shell, which is now continuous, is now used for laying the exhaust pipe. Four pipes each on the left and right end as bundled side pipes directly in front of the left and right rear wheels. A synonym for powerful and roaring "primal force".
• In fact, the engine power could be increased to 265 hp with various changes to the cylinder heads, the valve control, the crankcase and the pistons.
• The two previous oil coolers between the side tank and body disappear and are replaced by a tube oil cooler built into the front of the water cooler.
• In addition, minor changes are made to the frame and the wheel suspension (among other things, transverse leaf springs on the rear axle are moved up)
• The tires are changed to the Englebert brand
After Mercedes withdrew from racing at the end of 1955, the top driver Juan Manuel Fangio, who had been committed until then, had to look for a new job. Ferrari probably welcomed him with open arms. With other well-known drivers such as the two Italians Luigi Musso and Eugenio Castellotti as well as the fourth driver in the league, newcomer Peter Collins from England, Ferrari was able to muster a top-class driver team for the 1956 Grand Prix season.
Five Grand Prix victories were won in 1956 and JM Fangio, the ace among the drivers' guild, was able to record his fourth driver's world championship at the end of the season with the Ferrari D50.
